Diwali is an ancient religious festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains. Also known as the festival of lights, this extravagant 5-day event pays tribute to the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness. In addition to candle services and fireworks, Diwali celebrations also involve feasting, gift-giving, and worship of the deities Lakshmi and Ganesha.
The obverse of 1 oz Silver Diwali Medallions features the deity known as Ganesha. They are shown sitting on a cushion with an elaborate halo extending around their head. Other details include a pair of lanterns, lotus flowers, and a mouse with a bowl of sweets. Inscribed across the lower portion of the medal are the words Happy Diwali.
On the reverse side of Silver Happy Diwali Medallions is a depiction of Lakshmi. This revered goddess is seated upon a lotus flower, which historically has been seen as a symbol of rebirth. Like the obverse, there is a decorative halo extending around Lakshmi, as well as the surrounding lanterns and lotus flowers. The words Happy Diwali are inscribed upon the reverse. Other inscriptions include the Perth mintmark, and the medallion’s purity, weight, and metal type.
