Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the American Silver Eagle coin is the Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman. This design first appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, issued from 1916 to 1947, and was recreated in 1986 to appear on the American Silver Eagle. The full-length figure of Walking Liberty has a US flag draped over her shoulder and she is carrying branches of laurel and oak in her left arm and her right arm is outstretched. She is claimed to be walking to the dawn of a new day. This Weinman design is considered to be one of the most beautiful designs to ever appear on a coin.
The reverse of the American Silver Eagle coin is the heraldic eagle design by then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. It features a bald eagle, with a shield in front of it, an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other claw. There are 13 five-pointed stars above the eagle’s head, representing the 13 Colonies.
