Washington’s Crossing of the Delaware River occurred overnight on Christmas Day, December 25, 1776. Washington planned this surprise attack in secrecy in hopes of keeping a tight lid on the plans. He needed to get his force of 2,400 Continental Army troops across the river and march them into Trenton to catch the Hessian mercenaries guarding the city off guard. The Hessians were highly experienced, but ill-prepared for a fight after spending the entire night before celebrating the Christmas holiday.
