The American Platinum Eagle debuted in 1997 with four BU and four proof weights ranging from 1/10 oz to 1 oz. These coins were issued annually until 2008. In 2009, the decision was made to remove fractional ounce weights from the lineup and just release a 1 oz coin every year, similar to the American Silver Eagle series. In 2006, burnished coins were introduced as well.
The obverse side of the 1/4 oz Proof Platinum Eagle Coin showcases the Statue of Liberty. Designed by John Mercanti, this design shows a realistic depiction of the statue. Liberty is in front-facing relief as she stares at the viewer.

For example, coins issued from 1997 to 2003 will show an eagle designed by either Thomas D. Rogers or Al Maletsky. 2004 coins show the America sculpture outside the US Customs House. 2005 coins show a heraldic eagle. 2006 coins feature a Legislative Muse, while 2007 coins also show an American bald eagle.
