    South African Mint Bullion

One of the most respected sovereign mints in the world is the South African Mint. A wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank, the South African Mint is best known for the introduction of the Gold Krugerrand. However, the mint has other products that are available to modern investors and collectors.

    The Krugerrand

Introduced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand was initially available only as a 1 oz gold coin from 1967 to 1979. In 1980, fractional-ounce gold coins were introduced, and in 2017, the first-ever Silver Krugerrand was also offered. Today, Krugerrands are struck in BU and Proof for both investors and numismatists.

    The Big Five Series

One of the more enjoyable new collections from the South African Mint is its Big Five Series. Based on the history of big game hunting in Africa, this series catalogs the images of Africa’s famed big five animals: Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard, and Water Buffalo.

    Historic South African Gold Coins

There are two eras to South Africa’s history of gold coining: Pound and Rand. Prior to the establishment of the modern Republic of South Africa, the gold coins issued by the nation were aligned with the Pound of Great Britain. As such, you’ll find historic South African Gold coins with Pound-based denominations, though it is the South African Pound and not the British Pound. Following the establishment of the modern republic, the nation adopted the Rand as its official sovereign currency.
