Australian Gold Kangaroos

Originally introduced in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget, the Australian Gold Kangaroo Series has been available in its current iteration since 1990. The series regularly offers BU coins for investors and proof coins for collectors. There are at least six weights offered in this series each year targeting investors and numismatists alike.

Evolution of the Series

In 1986, the Perth Mint introduced the Australian Gold Nugget. This series featured four weights, with each denomination boasting its own depiction of a gold nugget historically discovered in Australia. These designs were used from year-to-year. However, in 1990 this approach changed.

The 1990 transition to the Australian Gold Kangaroo maintained the same four weights and changed the approach to the designs. The native marsupial was now the feature of the reverse field, with the same design appearing on all weights in the series each year. However, Perth Mint created a new kangaroo design each year.

Kangaroos – Australia’s Native Marsupial

The kangaroo species is native to Australia and consists of four extant subspecies. These include:

• Eastern Grey Kangaroo: The Eastern Grey Kangaroo is one of the largest kangaroo species and is characterized by its soft grey fur with a lighter belly. It has a powerful build and long, muscular hind legs adapted for hopping.
• Western Grey Kangaroo: The Western Grey Kangaroo has grey-brown fur with a paler coloration on its belly. It has a stocky build, and males tend to be larger than females.
• Red Kangaroo: The Red Kangaroo is the largest kangaroo species and is known for its reddish-brown fur. Males are much larger than females and can have powerful muscular builds.
• Antilopine Kangaroo: The Antilopine Kangaroo is characterized by its lighter reddish-brown fur and white markings on its face. It has a relatively short face compared to other kangaroo species.
