Australian Gold Kangaroo coins debuted in 1987, but at the time the series had a different design focus and name. Then known as the Australian Gold Nugget, the collection featured new reverse depictions of different famous gold nuggets discovered on the Australian continent. For example, the first design in the collection depicted the Welcome Stranger Nugget. In 1990, the series changed to feature the kangaroo on the reverse each year instead of a gold nugget.

The image shows the Queen in right-profile relief and includes her neckline and shoulders for the first time on Australian coins since 1966.

A kangaroo is shown in a new design on the reverse of 2021 Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins. This year’s depiction shows the kangaroo in a crouched position with its powerful rear legs bent and short front arms reaching down to balance on the ground.
