Collect Exciting New Silver Foils with JM Bullion

One of the newest forms of silver is also one of the most visually-brilliant forms of silver. Recent years have seen silver foils introduced as a distinctive, one-of-a-kind silver bullion option aimed at collectors. Silver foils are different than coins, bars, rounds, and other silver items in form and visuals. For more information on silver foils, please read below.

    What are Silver Foils?

Silver foils are often rectangular pieces of silver bullion that have been pressed into extremely thin layers. It’s almost like owning a piece of paper made from pure silver. Each silver foil is unique in the ability of the mint to produce photo-quality visuals on one or both fields of the item. Most, however, have a pure silver reverse field without any photo-quality visuals applied. Please note, this depends on the particular product lineup and the mint of origin.

    Possible Source of Inspiration

It is impossible to know exactly what inspired mints to produce such thin, distinctive silver bullion specimens. However, there are recent coin releases that may hold the key to solving the riddle. One of the most popular additions to collectible silver coin releases in recent years has been silver Certificates of Authenticity. Rather than a traditional paper COA, mints like the Perth Mint and others would issue a collectible silver coin that included a Certificate of Authenticity that was itself made from .999 pure silver. These thin items were essentially silver foils, and it is possible that mints took the concept a step further by producing and selling silver foils on their own rather than as a COA to another coin.

    Movie Poster Silver Foils

One of the first widely available silver foils was a 2019 release featuring a replica of the movie poster from the iconic feature film Aliens. This first major silver foil offered an obverse design that replicated the appearance of the extraterrestrial “egg” from Alien, with an eerie green light emitting from the base of the structure. The 2019 Australian Silver Alien Foil was released to mark the 40th anniversary of the iconic feature film hitting theaters. One year later, another series of feature film-themed silver foils was released in honor of the 25th feature film in the James Bond franchise.

The series of 2020 Australian Silver James Bond Foils totaled five designs in all, each one depicting the actual theatrical poster from a different James Bond film release. The collection was limited to the five most recent Bond films, each one of which featured Daniel Craig in the shoes of the British secret agent. The obverse of these silver foils includes the photo-quality replication of the theatrical posters from films number 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25 in the Eon Productions history of James Bond Films.

Details on each release include the use of 5 Grams of .999 pure silver content and a reverse field that is common to each of the five distinctive designs. The reverse maintains its pure silver visuals with the famed 007 logo at the center. The logo for 007 is depicted with the number “7” as the butt of a handgun. The name and logo of the Perth Mint feature on this field of the silver foil, with the name of the feature film included. Each of the silver foils is limited to a mintage of just 1,000 foils. On the obverse of each silver foil is the full-color, theatrical movie poster for:

    • Casino Royale
    • Quantum of Solace
    • Skyfall
    • Spectre
    • No Time To Die

Each of the James Bond Movie Poster Silver Foils come individually packaged from the Perth Mint. The packaging for these particular foils is unique in that each foil is housed inside of a clear Perspex case with mounting hardware on the back. You can mount the Perspex directly to the wall, or leave it in the base of the shipping box for display on a desk or shelf.

    Harry Potter Silver Foils

The Harry Potter franchise is one of the most beloved fantasy collections to come along in the last several decades. The fantasy land of witches and wizards is the creation of British author J.K. Rowling that includes seven novels released between 1997 and 2007, as well as eight feature film adaptations released between 2001 and 2011. Across the novel series and feature film franchise, the focus of the story remained the same: the students at Hogwarts.

The stories followed the lives of a group of young witches and wizards attending Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter was the primary character, as well as his classmates and close friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. While select scenes and storylines take place outside of the school, much of the novel and film storylines are set within the walls and on the grounds of Hogwarts. Students at Hogwarts are separated into four different houses within the school, each one reflecting the coveted behaviors and characteristics of the founding teachers of the school who were the first heads of these houses. The sorting hat determines which house the students end up in.

The school of Hogwarts has four individual student houses. Harry Potter and his closest friends are all members of Gryffindor. Each house has its own house colors and representative animal, all factors you will find in the reverse designs. These include:

    • Gryffindor: The design for the Gryffindor House crest includes its representative animal, the lion, with the colors red and gold.
    • Hufflepuff: In the design of the Hufflepuff House crest, you will find the badger with the colors yellow and black.
    • Ravenclaw: The house for the most sensitive and unique students, Ravenclaw House includes a design with a powerful aerial predator and the colors blue and gold.
    • Slytherin: A student house for the most dubious and sinister students at Hogwarts, the House Slytherin crest comes with a snake and the colors green and black.

Unlike all other silver foils released to date, the Hogwarts Crest Series is the first silver foil collection with assigned face values. Each one is a 5 Gram, .999 pure silver foil issued on behalf of Niue. The foils have an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief on the obverse side with the assigned face value noted as $1 (NZD). The bust of Her Majesty shown on this face is from Ian Rank-Broadley and was released for the first time in 1998 by the Royal Mint of England. All of the silver foils are packaged individually inside of protective capsules and housed in presentation boxes. The maximum mintage for each foil is 10,000 pieces.
