Celebrate 100 Years of Service with the American Legion Series from the US Mint

In every town and city in the United States, if you look hard you’ll find an American Legion outpost. Founded by American service members in France in the aftermath of World War I, the American Legion continues 100 years later in its mission to serve America’s warriors, their families, their communities, and ensure that our government doesn’t leave these brave individuals behind. The United States Mint honors the American Legion’s commitment to communities and service members across the country with a collection of 100th Anniversary American Legion coins for sale. Each of these beautiful specimens is now available for your consideration from JM Bullion.

    American Legion Gold Coins

The United States Mint offers two options for investors in collectors per metallic option. The American Legion Gold Coins are available as Uncirculated specimens and proof coins. Both of the gold coins share the same design. The obverse side of 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Gold Coins includes a design that commemorates the founding of the organization by American soldiers in France. The design field includes the Eiffel Tower at the center with a large “V” for victory imposed over it. There are commemorative dates of “1919” and “2019” on either side of the tower, with the national motto “In God We Trust” inscribed above. Around the design field is a geometric rim design taken from the badge of the American Legion.

The reverse side of 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Gold Coins includes the symbol of the United States of America during times of peace and war alike, the American bald eagle soaring in flight. The eagle’s wings envelop the edges of the coin with the American Legion emblem in front of the bird.

Each of the 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Gold Coins is produced by the United States Mint at the West Point Mint facility and includes a “W” mint mark on the obverse field of the coin. The gold coins have a face value of $5 (USD) issued by the United States and feature 90% gold content with 6% silver and a balance of copper.

    American Legion Silver Coins

Like the gold coins, the 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Silver Coins are available as either uncirculated or proof specimens. The silver coins have a different design from the gold specimens, but share that design across the two different versions. On the obverse side of the 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Silver Coins is the vision of the American Legion emblem. The badge of the organization includes a five-pointed star with “US” inscribed in the center. That is surrounded by a wheel with “American Legion” inscribed upon it. The badge is flanked by oak leaves and a lily that commemorate the American organization’s founding in France.

For the reverse of the 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Silver Coins, the US Mint again uses unique designs to celebrate the founding of the organization in France. In the center of the design there are two flags that cross each other, one being the flag of the United States of America and the other the American Legion flag. Above that is a French fleur de lis with “100 Years of Service” inscribed. There are commemorative date marks of “1919” and “2019” at either end of an arch above the fleur de lis.

All of the 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Silver Coins are produced by the United States Mint at the Philadelphia Mint facility and they bear a “P” mint mark on the reverse side of the coins. These coins have a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government and feature .999 pure silver content.

Both the gold and silver coins are available inside of a US Mint presentation box and come with an individual Certificate of Authenticity. The silver coins have a limited mintage for the entire range of 400,000 coins in total, while the two gold coins have a limited mintage for the range of 50,000 coins.

    More About the American Legion

The American Legion was initially formed by American soldiers serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in Paris, France at the end of World War I. The soldiers founded the organization on March 15, 1919, as a result of their concern for the well-being of American soldiers returning the US and their communities after the war. A non-partisan organization, the American Legion is the largest veterans group in the country with some two million members. Open to men and women, the Legion focuses on Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, Children and Youth, National Security, and Americanism. Among its accomplishments, the American Legion was vital in the passage of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 that established the GI Bill to help returning soldiers transition to a normal life through college education.
