At the southeastern tip of the United States, Florida is noted for its sandy beaches and citrus farms, and is a popular destination for Disney World vacationers and retirees seeking a warm climate. It is also visited frequently by treasure seekers lured by the promise of gold.
Florida is claimed to contain more sunken and buried treasures than any other state. From pirate loot to hastily-buried wealth to cargo lost at sea, it is thought that the state hides millions in lost valuables. If you prefer to find your gold and silver the more traditional way, there are a number of highly regarded precious metal dealers within Florida, too.
According to the Florida Department of Revenue (http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/tips/tip99a0113.html), Florida sales tax laws changed in 1999 to add an exemption for sales of U.S. legal tender coins. Currently, the sale of coins and currency that are U.S. legal tender – such as gold and silver American Eagle coins, old dollar bills, and rolls of silver quarters – are not taxable. This exemption is available regardless of the total purchase price involved, and regardless of whether the value of the coin lies primarily in its rarity and collectibility or in the precious metal it contains.
Silver, gold, and platinum bullion is also exempt from sales tax, as long as the total purchase price exceeds $500. Note that the purchase must be completed in one transaction of at least $500 to be eligible for the exemption; multiple smaller purchases, even if made over the course of a single day, are still taxable. To qualify for the exemption, this single transaction may include a combination of different gold, silver, and/or platinum bullion products.
On foreign coins, as well as bullion purchases of less than $500, state sales tax is due. Florida’s sales tax rate is currently 6%. Cities and counties may add additional taxes; the highest sales tax rates in Florida are currently 7.5%.
