The silver tetradrachms of the Kingdom of Paeonia are among the most historically fascinating and numismatically distinguished coins of the ancient Balkans, produced by a kingdom whose territory occupied the region of the upper Axios River valley in what is today northern Macedonia and whose rulers maintained a sophisticated royal coinage tradition. These coins were likely struck using local silver resources from the Balkan-Aegean region in the 4th century BC. The 3/5 grades for strike and surface indicate a coin with modest wear and tear, as well as average strike quality and crispness.
The tetradrachms struck during the reign of Lycceius from approximately 359 to 335 BC were produced during one of the most dangerous and consequential periods in Paeonians history, a reign that coincided almost exactly with the ascendancy of Philip II of Macedon whose military genius and political ruthlessness transformed the balance of power across the entire Balkan region and reduced many of Paeonia’s neighbors to Macedonian vassals or conquered provinces.
For the obverse of Paeonian Lycceius AR Tetradrachms, designers kept to the Hellenistic traditions of the region and offered a right-profile bust of the deity Apollo.
