The Seated Half Dollar, or Seated Liberty Half Dollar as it is sometimes known, was the second variety of Half Dollar ever produced. First introduced in 1839, the coin was quite different from the Bust Half Dollar that preceded it. The design was altered and the general public absolutely loved the coin, which probably explains why it remained in production until the latter stages of the 19th century.
Nowadays, collectors love these coins because they are incredibly rare and only growing rarer as time moves forward. These coins can be found, but it is very difficult to find them in excellent condition. Being that most every collector only likes to add well-preserved coins to their collection, collecting the Seated Half Dollar is something that becomes painstaking and expensive.
The price you are going to be asked to pay for a Seated Liberty Half Dollar is dependent on a few different factors. First and foremost, the condition of the coin is something collectors will never overlook. Though everyone wants to add well-preserved coins to their collections, the fact of the matter is that you will more often than not find Seated Half Dollars in poor condition.
Secondly, the year in which the coin was minted will play into the asking price. Seated Half Dollars produced during or near the years of the Civil War will sell for higher prices than those coins produced during less turbulent periods of American history. The pricing of Seated Half Dollars can range from as low as $20 to as high as $1,000. Of course, the coins that sell for $1,000 and more will be those rare coins that are also in excellent condition.
The most sought after Seated Half Dollars are those that have been preserved in excellent condition. These coins are quite difficult to find simply because Seated Half Dollars were so widely circulated and circulated for extended periods of time. Seated Half Dollars were produced for such a long period of time that the coins themselves are not difficult to find, but extremely difficult to find in excellent condition. The search for a well-preserved Seated half Dollar can best be described as attempting to find a needle in a haystack.
In addition, those Half Dollars that were produced in and around the years of the Civil War are extremely sought after by collectors. This was an important part of American history, so it is no surprise that collectors are interested in them.
The future value of the Seated Half Dollar is something that cannot be determined with any amount of certainty. With that said, however, it is generally agreed upon that these coins will only ever become increasingly valuable. As time moves forward, there will be fewer and fewer of these coins on the market and that means that the prices of those coins will become inflated. Especially when it comes to Seated Half Dollars that were produced during the 1840s and 1850s, they are only ever going to be increasingly difficult to find.
As such, now could be the best time to acquire a Seated Liberty Half Dollar.
