    1893 Indian Head Penny

As part of the second to last decade of Indian Head minting, the 1893 edition is a must-have for any and all collectors. Because these coins are part of the “newer” generation of Indian Heads, they are not quite as difficult to find as some of their earlier counterparts. With that being said, however, collectors have a difficult time finding these coins in good condition, and that is the biggest battle.

As part of American minting history, it is no wonder that collectors want to get their hands on these coins. With each passing year they become increasingly scarce, so it is best to get your hands on one now before it is too late.

Grading the 1893 Indian Head Penny

For coins 100 years old and older, collectors will always look at the condition the coin is in before anything else. It is a big enough feat just to find one of these coins, but the constant challenge is to find one in great condition. The process of officially judging the condition of an 1893 Indian Head Penny is known as grading, and the specifications below can help you determine what a coin of a certain grade will look like.

It must be said, however, that in order to derive an official grade, one must utilize the services of a professional coin grading company.

Uncirculated: An Uncirculated Indian Head Penny is one that never saw any time exchanging hands. The imagery on this coin will have been perfectly preserved, as will the raised aspects of the coin. Some of the mint’s original luster will have worn away, but for the most part the coin appears shiny and new. This is the type of coin every collector would like to get their hands on.

Extremely Fine: An Extremely Fine 1893 Indian Head Penny is one that saw only a very limited amount of time in circulation. These coins will play host to some scratching and other small signs of wear, but they are only visible upon close inspection. The mint’s original luster will most often no longer be present on these coins, but they will overall appear to be in great shape.

Fine: A coin given a Fine grade is one that saw a good amount of time exchanging hands and paying for goods. The coin’s faces will show a lot of wear, including scratching and chipping, and the faces will have had their texture worn away for the most part. The one takeaway from these coins is that the imagery and inscriptions will still be able to be deciphered without too much trouble.

Good: This grade is given to the most heavily circulated 1893 Indian Head Pennies. Scratching, chipping, and plenty of other signs of wear will be present on these coins and the imagery itself will be difficult to make out. Being quite beat up, it is easy to see why these coins do not exactly carry high prices.
