Introduced in 1892, the Barber Coinage Series included a singular obverse bust of Liberty on the US dime, quarter, and half dollar. 1899-O Barber Half Dollars had a total mintage of 1,724,000 coins at New Orleans and are exceptionally scarce at higher mint grades. This 1899-O Barber Half Dollar is one of only 10 coins with an MS65 grade, with just eleven coins in total earning a higher grade. Today, 1899-O Barber Half Dollars in MS65 condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Barber Coinage Series was introduced as a result of calls from the American public and political officials to replace the Seated Liberty design that had been in use on most silver denominations since the 1830s. Charles E. Barber’s depiction of Liberty featured on the obverse of all three denominations, while his reverse image of the heraldic eagle was used on the quarter and half dollar. The 6th US Mint Chief Engraver, Barber is part of the only father-son duo in American history to serve in the position of Chief Engraver. As 6th Chief Engraver, Barber immediately succeeded his father, William Barber, who had held the position before him for a decade.
This 1899-O Barber Half Dollar is available in Mint State 65 condition. The typical MS65 specimen has an attractive, high-qualitly luster with light, scattered contact marks and no major dectractions in the primary focal fields. Hairlines may be visible and will be scattered if present. The 1899-O Barber Half Dollar is well known for its higher strike quality compared to the previous year’s release.
On the obverse of 1899-O Barber Half Dollar Coins is a bust of Lady Liberty. This classical right-profile relief depicts Liberty with a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath on her head. The field includes inscriptions of the national motto, the year of issue, and 13 stars.
The reverse of 1899-O Barber Half Dollars features a depiction of the heraldic eagle. This image shows a bald eagle with the US national shield. The eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, as well as a banner in its beak with E PLURIBUS UNUM inscribed. The nation of issue, face value, and 13 stars appear on this side.
