In 1883, the United States Mint introduced a new design for the US nickel. This new design came from Charles Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Barber’s new design for the US nickel featured a beautiful bust of Liberty on the obverse with a wreath and the Roman number V on the reverse. Today, 1883 Liberty Head V-Nickels in certified condition are available to you online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Liberty Head Nickel was produced by the United States Mint from 1883 to 1912, with a handful of coins believed to have been issued in 1913. In the first year of issue, the reverse design was changed before the end of the calendar year to add the word CENTS to the bottom of the reverse design field. That makes these 1883 Liberty Head Nickels with no cents a unique piece from the overall series.
All of these 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels are available to you in Mint State 65 condition. Coins in this condition have an attractive, high-quality mint luster with only a few, small contact marks scattered throughout the field. There is also the potential for flaws such as two larger marks, one or two small patches of hairlines, and noticeable, light scuff marks.
On the obverse of 1883 Liberty Head Nickels, you will find a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty. This design shows Liberty wearing both a coronet and a wreath on her head. The field offers a ring of 13 stars around Liberty and the date of 1883 at the bottom.
The reverse side of the 1883 Liberty Head V Nickel comes with a depiction of the face value in a Roman numeral. The large V in the center is flanked by a wreath and, importantly for this listing, does not feature the word cents. The Roman numeral V indicates the coin has a face value of 5 cents.
