The Liberty Head 3 Cent Nickel is a unique piece of American coinage history. Proof 1881 Liberty Head 3 Cent Nickels had a limited mintage of only 3,575 pieces, but a remarkable number of these survive today in grades between PR64 and PR66, giving modern numismatists a great opportunity to collect one of these high-quality specimens. Today, the 1881 Proof Liberty Head 3 Cent Nickel is available in PF65 condition at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
One of the primary reasons for the introduction of the Liberty Head 3 Cent Nickel in 1865 was to offer a coin denomination that exactly matched the price of postage at the time (3 cents). Oddly enough, the coin is known as the 3 Cent Nickel not because of its size or face value, but because it contains 25% nickel. Many of these coins had a silver appearance, unlike other copper-nickel coins struck in American history.
The 1881 Proof Liberty Head 3 Cent Nickel available here comes in a plastic slab to protect the PF65 condition. The typical PF65 coin has an attractive, high-quality luster with light, scattered contact marks possible. No major detracting marks are visible in the primary focal fields.
On the obverse of 1881 Liberty Head 3 Cent Nickels is a left-profile effigy of Lady Liberty. The design shows Liberty’s head in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head that reads LIBERTY. The nation of issue and the date of issue feature around the edge of the design field.
On the reverse of 1881 Liberty Head 3 Cent Nickel Coins, the design field is simple and elegant. The Roman numeral III is at the center of the field with an elegant wreath surrounding it. The wreath is complemented at the bottom-center with an ornate bow.
