Confederate States dollar banknotes were issued with a wide range of design elements, with certain denominations even coming with several different designs for the same face value. This was often the result of the fact that several banks, lithographic companies, and other sources were producing notes for the Confederacy.
When it comes to the 1862-1862 $100 Confederate Currency Note, two different obverse designs were issued in the 4th Series issue of Confederate notes. Keatinge & Ball issued $100 notes with John C. Calhoun on the note, while the image of a milkmaid and a steam locomotive were issued by two different groups. J.T. Patterson & Co of Columbia, South Carolina, and Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond, Virginia.
On the obverse of 1862-1863 $100 Confederate Currency Notes is a depiction of a milkmaid in the lower-left field with the image of a steam locomotive chugging down the tracks in the center of the design element. The Confederacy infamously issued banknotes with images of slaves on the obverse. The reverse side of 1862-1863 $100 Confederate Currency Notes was left blank during production.
