Santa Maria is a populous city in Santa Barbara County, California, approximately 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles. It is famous for its barbecue, which is said to be the best in the west, and its wine industry.

The Chumash people made their homes in the Santa Maria Valley for thousands of years before European settlement. Spanish explorers passed through the valley in 1769, as part of the Portola Expedition. They established Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa just north of the valley and Mission La Purisma near Lompoc. It wasn’t until 1821, after the end of the Mexican War of Independence, that these lands became available for private ownership.

In the late 19th century, many farmers moved to Santa Maria to take advantage of its rich, fertile soil. Agriculture continues to be an important local industry to this day. The city gained official status in 1875, when it was known as Grangerville. It later became known as Central City, before being called Santa Maria to avoid confusion with Central City, Colorado. Large scale oil wells were discovered in the area at the turn of the 20th century. By 1957, 1,775 oil wells in the Santa Maria Valley produced more than $640 million worth of oil.
