Through history, the US Mint has produced a wide variety of coins, some of which are valuable to collectors, others that aren’t. One of the more attractive collections is the Barber Dime, which was produced during the 19th and 20th century. Though these coins were produced so long ago, they are still quite popular today amongst collectors.

Grading the 1916 Barber Dime

For collectors, the first thing that is looked at on coins as old as the 1916 Barber Dime is the condition the coin is in. Collectors, striving to attain attractive collections, are always going to want to get their hands on the coins that have survived the years without too much damage. This, however, is not always such an easy task to accomplish.

Normally, the process of grading a coin is done by a professional company, but not everyone has the time and money to send their collectors’ items away for grading. Uncirculated: An Uncirculated Barber Dime is one that never spent any time in circulation and did not incur any damage as a result. Even the original luster, which was applied by the mint during the production process, will have been preserved so that the coin still has a shine to it.

Extremely Fine: Coins given this grade were circulation, but not for any extended period of time. They will appear to be mostly pristine, but upon closer inspection will show some light signs of wear and tear. Unfortunately, the coin’s original luster will have likely faded away, but the coin does not look as old as it actually is.

Fine: To receive this grade, the coin in question will have had to been circulated for a decent amount of time. Through the exchanging of hands over the years, these coins will have incurred some light damage.

Good: A coin deserving of this grade is one that spent an exorbitant amount of time being circulated and will have incurred a good amount of damage along the way. These coins will play host to plenty of scratching and other blemishes and will appear generally torn and tattered. These are far and away the most affordable 1916 Barber Dimes on the market today.
