Mexico celebrated 100 years of independence from Spain in 1920 by, among other things, releasing a gold coin from the Mexican Mint. Known as the gold Centenario, this coin had a 50 Peso face value of featured iconic images from the struggle for independence.
Chief among those designs was the Victoria of Mexican Independence Victory Column, known simply as Winged Victory. Her imagery was symbolic of Mexican independence, and featured the broken chains of servitude in her left hand while her right hand held aloft a wreath crown. This image, along with the nation’s coat of arms, feature prominently on the Mexican Silver Libertad.
Each 2015 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad available today has a near-perfect grade of Mint State 69 from the NGC. Coins in this condition have their full, original mint luster, but also include a maximum of two minor detracting flaws such as miniscule contact marks or abrasions.
On the obverse face of the coin is the modern depiction of Winged Victory, which mimics the appearance of the statue from the victory column erected in the center of Mexico City in 1920. Engravings include the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity in Spanish, along with the year of issue and the “MO” mint mark of the Mexican Mint.
The reverse features the modern coat of arms for the nation, along with ten historic designs encircling it around the outer rim of the design field. The 2 oz. Mexican Silver Libertad was first introduced in 1996, making these coins the 20th annual striking of this particular weight.
