The quarter is one of the most popular circulation coins in the United States when it comes to introducing special designs. Throughout the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, the reverse of circulating specimens in the series came with new designs honoring all corners of the United States of America. First came the State Quarters program, which was immediately followed by America the Beautiful Quarters, the latter issued in tandem with the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Series. The US Mint frequently issued these beautiful quarters in Silver Proof Quarter Sets.
The State Quarters and America the Beautiful Quarters were both issued in Silver Proof Quarter Sets throughout the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. While the coins were the same size as the cupronickel coins produced for circulation use, there were two important differences between the coins used in commerce and these beautiful Silver Proof Quarters. First and foremost, the Silver Proof Quarters had actual silver content in each coin. Second, the Silver Proof Quarters were only issued for sale in sets by the US Mint.
The silver content of the Proof Quarters in these sets depends on the date. Up until 2018, the Silver Proof Quarters issued by the United States Mint used the traditional metallic alloy consisting of 90% silver and 10% copper. In 2019, the US Mint boosted the purity to 99.9% silver per coin. In addition, the quarters were struck with frosted designs overlaying mirror-like fields for impressive visual contrast.
The most prominent Silver Proof Quarter Set of the last decade was the US Mint Proof Silver America the Beautiful Quarter Sets. These sets were issued alongside the 5 oz silver coins of the ATB Bullion Series. The sets featured five designs each year, with the following issues:
There was no 2021 Proof Silver America the Beautiful Quarter Set as just one coin, for Alabama, was issued in 2021 to complete the ATB Series. This coin was, instead included in the standard US Mint Proof Silver Set issued that year.
The United States Mint packages its Silver Proof Quarter Sets inside of plastic holders. Each holder contains five coins per date mark, in the case of the Proof ATB Quarters. The plastic holders are surrounded by a commemorative sleeve and include a Certificate of Authenticity. Please keep in mind that this is the original packaging from the United States Mint.
Silver Proof Quarter Sets are struck by the United States Mint at its San Francisco Mint facility. The coins come with an S mint mark denoting the mint of origin.
