Celebrate More than Six Decades of Star Trek with Themed Silver Coins from JM Bullion

In 1966, Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe came to life on American television sets when Star Trek was released as a new TV series. Though it only lasted for three seasons, it set the stage for 60-plus years of animated series, additional television series, and 13 feature films to carry the Star Trek name on for generations to come. JM Bullion carries a wide range of Star Trek-themed silver bullion coins to capture the attention of fans from The Original Series to the latest series to grace televisions around the world. Explore all of the options available today.

    Star Trek Starship Coins

One of the first series of silver coins offered by any mint to honor Star Trek was the collection of starship coins from the Perth Mint. The coins in this release featured colorized designs on the reverse field depicting a different starship from the various television series in the Star Trek universe. Each coin had 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and a limited mintage of just 5,000 silver coins. These products are legal tender in Tuvalu and ship in a Star Trek-themed presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity. All of the coins had the same obverse bust of Queen Elizabeth II from Ian Rank-Broadley, with the reverse designs including:

    • USS Enterprise (The Original Series)
    • USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
    • Deep Space Nine Station (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
    • USS Voyager (Star Trek: Voyager)
    • USS Enterprise NX-01 (Star Trek: Enterprise)

In the case of each of the individual starship silver coins, the products were proof specimens with frosted visuals and mirrored fields. The colorization was limited to the central design element’s background field. While the starship itself retained silver visuals, the background of space had brilliant colorization.

Star Trek Captain & Starship Coin Sets

Issued at the same time in 2015, the Perth Mint offered colorized proof silver coins with the images of the actors who portrayed starship captains in the five different television series that debuted between 1966 and 2001. This series followed the same approach as the starship collection. Queen Elizabeth II was featured on the obverse of all the Tuvalu legal tender coins. Each one had 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and a limited mintage of only 5,000 silver coins. The reverse field, rather than depicting a starship, offered the image of the actor who portrayed the captain in colorized relief. This included the following release:

    • Captain James T. Kirk – William Shatner (The Original Series)
    • Captain Jean-Luc Picard – Sir Patrick Steward (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
    • Captain Benjamin Sisko – Avery Brooks (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
    • Captain Kathryn Janeway – Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager)
    • Captain Jonathon Archer – Scott Bakula (Star Trek: Enterprise)

These individual captain coins were eventually paired up in two-coin sets from the Perth Mint with the starship coin that each one commanded in the respective television series. The two-coin sets had a unique presentation case for the coins and had a limited mintage of only 1,500 sets.

    Star Trek Shaped Silver Coin

One of the more distinctive coins released in the last several years to honor the Star Trek universe was the Delta-shaped coin that replicated the Star Trek emblem. This coin offers 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and is available with a themed package from the mint, a clear display case, and a Certificate of Authenticity. With a limited mintage of just 5,000 coins, the obverse field features Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief in the popular Ian Rank-Broadley design. The reverse depicts only the words “50th Anniversary” as the coin was issued in 2016 on the 50th-anniversary date of the debut of The Original Series.

    Perth Mint Character Coins

Over the course of time, the Perth Mint has released various other small series and individual issues in its Star Trek lineup. These coins have date marks ranging from 2016 to 2019 and have one thing in common across each issue: all are legal tender coins from Tuvalu. Beyond that, individual weights, mintages, packaging, and designs can vary. Options in other Perth Mint Star Trek character releases include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • 2016 2 oz USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Crew: This 2 oz silver coin features the colorized images of all the actors that portrayed major roles in the crew of the Enterprise during Star Trek: The Original Series. They are all featured on the reverse along with the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, a colorized outer space in the background, and the silver Delta logo of Star Trek. Just 5,000 of the coins were produced.
    • 2017 1 oz Next Generation 30th Anniversary Coin: With colorized depictions of Jean-Luc Picard, portrayed by Sir Patrick Stewart, on the reverse, this coin marked the 30th anniversary of the second TV series in the Star Trek universe. Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted in 1987 and this limited issue coin features a mintage of only 3,000 specimens.
    • 2017 Mirror, Mirror Proof: A unique release within the Star Trek Series of coins from Perth was the Mirror, Mirror Proof that pulled from the actual scenes in the series to create colorized designs. In the case of this release, the scene on the reverse comes from an episode that airs October 6, 1967, when Spock finds himself face to face with himself in a parallel universe.
    • 2019 1 oz Captain Kirk Proof: One of the more recent releases, this particular colorized proof is unique in that the design of Captain James T. Kirk on the reverse was approved by actor William Shatner himself. The coin boasts an improved silver content of .9999 fineness compared to earlier releases and has a mintage of only 3,000 silver coins.

Brief Background on the Perth Mint

Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint was originally meant to be the final of three Royal Mint of England branch facilities in the Australian continent, joining the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint. Just three years later, the federation movement would start in Australia and the nation would find itself on the path to independence. The Perth Mint continued coining colonial currency and new decimalized coins until 1965. When the new Royal Australian Mint opened in Canberra, the Perth Mint’s ownership was transferred to the government of Western Australia. Since that time, it has served as a state-run mint that operates independently of the Royal Australian Mint and also enjoys legal-tender status for its coins under the Currency Act of 1965.

    Royal Canadian Mint Character Coins

The Perth Mint was not the only major producer focusing on Star Trek themes following the 50th anniversary of the franchise. The Royal Canadian Mint also dabbled in the production of colorized silver proofs focusing on characters from The Original Series in its primary release. That primary collection of silver coins from the RCM included a four-coin character set issued in 2016.

This four-coin set offered 1/2 Troy oz coins with .9999 pure silver content and a face value of $10 (CAD) backed by the Canadian government. The coins were proof specimens with frosted elements and mirrored fields, as well as colorized depictions on the reverse of different characters. The releases included:

    • Captain Kirk
    • Scotty
    • Uhura
    • Spock

Each of these characters was shown on the reverse with an element from The Original Series that was indelibly linked to that individual. For example, the Captain Kirk coin depicted William Shatner in the captain’s seat with the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 in the background, while the Scotty coin showed actor Jim Doohan with his trademark communicator in hand.

The obverse of all of the coins in this series has the Queen Elizabeth II effigy created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt. Each coin is individually packaged inside of a black display box and ships with a Star Trek-themed shipper featuring artwork depicting the character from the reverse. Each coin was capped at a mintage of 12,500.

Brief Background on the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint is the sovereign mint of Canada. Originally founded in 1908 to refine gold and silver from the Yukon Territories, its mission evolved over time to serve as the sovereign coining facility and production site of paper currency for Canada. The original Ottawa Mint remains in operation today and is responsible for the production of numismatic products, while the Winnipeg Mint opened in 1980 produces both coin and paper denominations for the country.
