Antique Norse God Series

Most people are familiar with the gods and goddesses of Roman and Greek mythology. At a loss to explain the events occurring in the world around them, ancient civilizations assigned human-like beings god-like characteristics related to events ranging from turbulent seas to devastating famines. Each god or goddess was said to represent something different, from love to war. While the gods of Roman and Greek mythology are borderline household names, that is not often the case with the gods of another culture’s mythology.

The mythology of Norse civilizations have long remained in the shadows by comparison. A variety of mints and different designers around the globe are helping Norse gods emerge from the mist and into the popular culture of 21st century life with stunning designs on silver rounds. Among the most brilliant and coveted at the moment are the Antique Norse God Series of silver rounds from Osborne Precious Metals and Anonymous Mint.

A Collaborative Effort

The newest Norse God Series comes from coin creator Julie Lindquist, working with Anonymous Mint and Osborne Precious Metals. These new silver rounds feature 10 rounds in total, but only five gods are represented. The Norse Silver Rounds are available in 1 oz weights and 5 oz weights, with each god represented twice.

All of the 1 oz rounds have a maximum mintage of just 2,000 rounds and ship in display boxes with signed Certificates of Authenticity. Anonymous Mint worked with master sculptor Luigi Badia to bring renowned artist Howard David Johnson’s Norse artwork to life on these rounds. Each one is a proof, mirrored product with an antique finish. The five designs include the following:

  • Odin: On the obverse side of each 1 oz Antique Norse God Series Odin Silver Round you’ll find the image of Odin as he sits upon his throne flanked by many of his common animal companions from Norse mythology. These creatures include his wolves Geri and Freki. Engravings identify Odin and his status as “The All-Father.”
  • Thor: On the obverse of the 1 oz Antique Norse Gods Series Thor Silver Round is the imposing image of the God of Thunder. Thor presides over the wind, rain, fair weather, thunder, lightning, and agricultural crops, and he is the son of Odin and the giantess Fjorgyn. Critical to the design is his powerful hammer held out, which is known as Mjolnir.
  • Hel: On the obverse of the 1 oz Antique Norse God Series Hel Silver Round is the image of Hel, hauntingly surrounded by the dead of the underworld. She is depicted on the round sitting upon her thrown with a sullen, hollow look on her face.
  • Freya: On the obverse is the image of Freya created by renowned artist Howard David Johnson. His depiction of the Goddess of Love shows Freya riding in her chariot pulled by two cats. Freya, though holding the position as Goddess of Love, oversees love, beauty, sexuality, fertility, gold, war and death. Half of those who die in war are received by Freya, with the other half going to Odin.
  • Loki: On the obverse of these rounds you’ll find the image of Loki, the shape-shifting Norse god. Depending upon the sources you read, Loki would occasionally assist the other Norse gods, or he would use his shape shifting ability to maliciously disrupt the endeavors of the other gods. He is the father of Hel, Goddess of Death, as well as many other Norse characters.

All of the rounds in this series, both 1 oz and 5 oz, have a shared reverse design. The reverse of the rounds features the image of one of the members of the Valkyrie, Odin’s chosen band of warrior maidens responsible for choosing who lives and dies among mankind’s battles. The Valkyrie famously rode their steeds into battle in the skies overhead, the roar of their horses serving as thunder and the glint of their swords providing lightning.

As noted in the product description, these are antique rounds. The application of an antique finish to silver rounds gives them the rich, warm patina of age and circulation without actually exposing the products to years of wear and tear through handling. This helps to add subtle depth and visual brilliance to the overall appearance of the rounds.

Each of the Antique Norse God Series Rounds available to purchase comes with edge lettering highlighting the serial number of each individual round in the 2,000-round production.

About Osborne Precious Metals

Osborne Precious Metals is the oldest private mint in the United States, and it can trace its roots back to 1835. At the time of the mint’s founding, Andrew Jackson was in the White House and there was not a singular legal tender banknote in circulation in the US. In fact, it would be another 30 years following the founding of Osborne Precious Metals until legal tender US banknotes were the only ones accepted in the country.

Today, Osborne Precious Metals is still located in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has gone through a number of name changes and iterations in its time. It produces a variety of silver, gold, and copper products for private entities.

About the Anonymous Mint

Anonymous Mint is a small coin creation company that specializes in silver and copper coinage. All of its products are struck with extremely limited mintage figures and the designs are considered limited editions; once they’re gone, they’re gone. When it comes to the physical production of the coins, Anonymous Mint works with larger private minting facilities in the United States to strike and distribute its products. In the case of the Kraken Rounds, the North American Mint was its production partner, but Anonymous has also recently worked with Osborne Precious Metals on a Norse Gods Series.

Why Consider Silver Rounds and Private Mint Silver Bullion?

There are a number of reasons to consider investing in silver rounds instead of gold or silver bullion coins. Specifically, there are three reasons you should consider investing your hard-earned cash in silver rounds instead of bullion coins:

  • Availability
  • Ease of Trade
  • Price

Availability is always a limiting factor with most of the popular silver bullion coins in the world. While the American Silver Eagle is a notable exception, which the United States Mint striking those coins to meet demand, the vast majority of other programs have strict caps on the mintage in any given year. Aside from the American Silver Eagle, 1 oz Silver Rounds are the easiest silver products to find on the market.

Silver rounds are also easier to trade in many cases. Because so many individuals are turning to rounds, the availability is also met at times with shortages. This means that many dealers, though not all, will readily by them back from you with no/low transaction fees because they can turn them around quickly and sell them to someone else.

Beyond availability and ease of trade, the biggest benefit of purchasing silver rounds is the price. While bullion coins from sovereign mints come with higher premiums, the price you pay a coin dealer over the spot price of silver, silver rounds are currently the least expensive form of physical silver to invest in.
