Other British Silver Coins Available from JM Bullion

Investors and collectors in North America often think first of the Royal Mint of England when looking into British Silver Coins. However, there are silver coins issued for British overseas territories by mints other than the Royal Mint. The Pobjoy Mint is a privately-owned mint in England’s Surrey County, just one hour from London, which issues British Silver Coins on behalf of governments around the globe. The mint has a particular focus on coining silver for Britain’s remaining overseas territories.

The Silver Pegasus Series – British Virgin Islands Coins

In 2017, the Pobjoy Mint issued a brand-new series of beautiful silver coins for sale for the British Virgin Islands. An overseas British Territory, the British Virgin Islands are in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles and consist of four main islands: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. In addition to the four main islands, there are some 50 smaller islands and cays in the BVI and only 15 of the islands in total are inhabited.

The Silver Pegasus Series debuted for the British Virgin Islands with the release of the 2017 1 oz British Virgin Islands Silver Reverse Frosted Pegasus Coin. The coin has a face value of One Dollar as the BVI uses the US Dollar as its official currency. Each coin contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and these debut coins had a maximum mintage of 50,000 coins.

On the reverse of the 2017 Silver Pegasus Coin is the image of a winged Pegasus held by the Goddess Athena. She is depicted standing at the horse’s side and wielding a spear as the Pegasus opens its wings and lifts its front hooves off the ground. On the obverse of the coin is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait captures the Queen wearing the royal diadem crown and is unique to the Pobjoy Mint.

The Silver Pegasus Series offers a new design on the reverse face each year, and as such the 2018 1 oz British Virgin Islands Silver Reverse Frosted Pegasus Coin offers collectors another option in this series. These coins have an entirely unique image of the Pegasus on the reverse, this time capturing only a portion of the horse as it opens its wings wide in anticipation of flight. There are engravings of “$1” on these coins as opposed to “One Dollar,” and the Pobjoy Mint again used a maximum mintage of 50,000 coins for this issue.

Both of the Silver Pegasus Series coins from the Pobjoy Mint have a reverse frosted, or reverse proof, finish. A reverse proof coin has visual aspects which are opposite that of a typical proof. The background field features a strong, frosted matte finish and the design sets have a deeply-mirrored, clear finish.

    Falkland Islands Silver Coin

The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory on the Patagonian Shelf in the South Atlantic Ocean just 300 miles off Argentina’s Patagonia coast. The islands in the archipelago include East Falkland, West Falkland, and roughly 776 smaller islands. Since 1833, the islands have been ruled by Britain, though Argentina maintains a claim to the islands that resulted in all-out war in 1982, which is the source of this commemorative bullion coin.

The 2017 1 oz Falkland Islands Anniversary of Liberation Coin was issued to mark the 35th anniversary of the British liberation of the islands following an invasion by Argentina. In April 1982, Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands and the nearby British territories of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Argentina invaded to restore its claim to sovereignty over the islands. The British response included a naval task force to counter the Argentine incursion.

In the 10-week war that followed, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and 3 Falkland Islanders died. In the end, the British forced an Argentine surrender and the islands returned to British rule on 14 June 1982. The Falkland Islands Anniversary of Liberation Coin celebrates British victory and rule over the Falklands with a reverse image of Britannia looking out over the seas as a symbol of the British Royal Navy’s reach and power. The coins have a face value of 1 Crown and contain 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver. There was a limited mintage of 42,671 in this issue.

On the obverse of the coin is Pobjoy Mint’s exclusive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait depicts the Queen wearing the royal diadem and includes engravings of her name, the nation of issue, and the year of issue. These Falkland Islands coins, like the British Virgin Islands specimens, are reverse proof.
