The 2019 ATB Series Designs

Each new release year in the ATB Series comes with five new designs representing different states or territories within the United States of America. The 2019 ATB Series coins are distinct in the series as the designs represent three states along with two of the overseas territories of the United States. The second and third releases in 2019 represent the two of the three Pacific Ocean territories of the US that are located further from the mainland US than any other territory or state within the country.

2019 Lowell National Historical Park

First up in the 2019 release is the coin representing the state of Massachusetts. The 2019 ATB Lowell National Historical Park coin features a reverse design of a woman working a power loom inside of a mill as the Boott Mill clock tower is visible out the window behind her workstation. Located in the northeastern Massachusetts town of Lowell, the Lowell National Historical Park comprises several buildings throughout the city that preserve the sites that powered the textile industry in the region during the Industrial Revolution.

The first Europeans settled in what is now Lowell, Massachusetts in the late 17th century and by the1820s the city was a vital hub for transportation in the early US and became a textile giant within the US economy. By the post-World War II era though, Lowell’s textile industries were in steep decline and the national historical park was established in 1978 to preserve the buildings that contributed to the region’s historical prominence. The historical park encompasses 141 acres of land administered by the National Park Service.

2019 American Memorial Park

Just the second coin representing a US territory, behind the release of the Puerto Rico coin, the 2019 American Memorial Park coin includes a reverse design that depicts the American Memorial Park in the Northern Mariana Islands as a young Chamorro woman looks on at the fluttering flags within the circle of the monument. The Chamorro people are the indigenous settlers of the Northern Mariana Islands. While just 19,000 people are estimated to remain on the islands, some 65,000 live on nearby Guam while 93,000 are spread across Hawaii and the states of the US West Coast.

The American Memorial Park is a unique park within the National Park System of the United States as it is considered a living memorial. Located on the island of Saipan in the Northern Marianas, the American Memorial Park commemorates the sacrifice of the 4,000 US Military personnel and local Chamorro population who lost their lives during the Marianas Campaign of World War II in June 1944. The park includes baseball fields, cycling and running paths, picnicking spots, swimming, and tennis courts, along with a World War II museum and flag monument. American Memorial Park is jointly administered by the Government of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the US National Park Service.

2019 War in the Pacific National Historical Park

The release of the 2019 War in the Pacific National Historical Park is timed in conjunction with the American Memorial Park in the Northern Mariana Islands because of the proximity of and connection between Guam and the CNMI (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). The CNMI consists of 14 islands, of which Guam is the southernmost island in the chain. However, Guam exists as a separate territory of the United States of America. The reverse of 2019 War in the Pacific National Historical Park coin offers the scene of US Marines and other US Military personnel coming ashore during an amphibious invasion on the island of Guam as part of the Second Battle of Guam against Imperial Japan during World War II.

Like the other islands of the CNMI chain, Guam’s native inhabitants are Chamorro people who settled the island some 4,000 years ago. Spanish explorers first landed on Guam in 1521 and began colonizing it a century later in 1668. Following defeat to the United States in the Spanish-American War, Spain ceded the island to the United States in 1898 under the terms of the Treaty of Paris signed between the sides. The War in the Pacific National Historical Park honors the sacrifices of all those who served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and includes sites such as battlefields, gun emplacements, trenches, and cave systems dug by the Japanese during their 1941-1944 occupation of the island.

2019 San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

The 2019 San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Coin’s reverse side reflects imagery commonly found on the Spanish real, the official currency throughout Spanish territories in the Americas from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Elements of the colonial real design included on the reverse of these 2019 ATB silver coins include arches and a bell that symbolize a sense of community. Additional elements include the lion of Spanish colonial power, wheat to represent farming, and waves denoting the San Antonio River. Along the San Antonio River in Texas are the four missions of the San Antonio National Historical Park.

The missions preserved in the park represent buildings constructed by Spanish religious missionaries to spread Catholicism throughout the southwestern territories of Spain in North America. The goal of the missionaries was to bring Christianity to the indigenous people of the New World. The missions protected by the San Antonio National Historical Park include Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Geographically, these four missions are aligned from northeast of the city, upstream of the San Antonio River, downstream to the southwest.

2019 Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness

The final design that appears in the 2019 ATB Series is the 2019 Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness coin. On the reverse of these coins is the image of a drift boat floating along the Salmon River through Idaho. The wilderness of Idaho’s untamed wildlands is featured prominently in the background design of the 2019 Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Known as the River of No Return, the Salmon River runs through central Idaho over a span of 425 miles and drops more than 7,000 feet in elevation from its headwaters to its confluence with the Snake River.

Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness was established in 1980 as a protected wilderness area and later renamed after the US Senator Frank Church in 1984. The protected wilderness area includes a contiguous segment of land spanning 2.367 million acres and is the largest swath of federally protected land in the United States outside of Alaska. The only other protected land in the continental US is located in the Adirondacks of New York and is a state-managed wilderness area.

Details of 2019 ATB Series Coins

The 2019 ATB Series coins are available from the United States Mint with 5 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and a face value of $.25 (USD). The coins all share a common obverse design of President George Washington. The nation’s first elected president, Washington’s portrait has featured on the obverse of the US quarter since 1932 and was placed there to honor his 200th birthday. John Flanagan created the portrait in 1932 based upon a 1786 bust of Washington by William Cousins.

2019 ATB bullion silver coins are available to purchase inside of protective packaging when purchased individually, inside of mint tubes of 10 coins, or Monster Boxes of 100 coins with 10 tubes in total.

2019 ATB Coin Options

The America the Beautiful coins are always offered by the United States Mint in two primary options. The US Mint offers the aforementioned silver bullion coins through authorized dealers, as well as a Burnished ATB Coin. The burnished versions of 2019 ATB coins are vapor-blasted after coining to create a matte finish on the coin’s design elements to differentiate the specimens visually from the bullion version of the coin. Burnished ATB coins are housed inside of protective US Mint boxes and come with a Certificate of Authenticity when originally issued by the US Mint through authorized dealers.

Collectors and investors will also find a Colorized ATB coin available for each design in the series. The Colorized 2019 ATB coins are bullion specimens that have been refined with colorized lacquers on the reverse design fields. The US Mint does not colorize any of its coin programs. The Colorized ATB coins are refined after production by third-party dealers and offered to investors and collectors alike.
