2013 America The Beautiful Coins from JM Bullion

One of the preferred circulation coins in the United States is the quarter. Bearing the image of the nation’s first president and offering the most convenient face value of any circulation coin in the US, the quarter is what every child hopes to find when they see a coin on the ground. The 2013 America the Beautiful quarter series captures the beauty of the American quarter on a 5 oz coin with a unique design to honor national parks, forests, and monuments from across the country.

Introduction to America the Beautiful Quarters

The America the Beautiful quarter series borrows some of its design features from the standard circulation quarter, but is available in a 5 oz weight that dwarfs its circulation cousin. The program was launched in 2010 following congressional approval of the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008.

America had previously seen state- and territory-specific quarters released in the late 20th and early 21st century under the state quarters program, but this series is an entirely different set. These coins, including the 2013 ATB Silver Coins, are struck in uncirculated versions with an additional silver bullion coin that bears the same images on its obverse and reverse.

The entire America the Beautiful coin series will feature a total of 56 coins, representing each of the 50 US states, five national territories, and the District of Columbia. Each coin in the America the Beautiful series features a unique design on the reverse side that is representative of a national park, forest, or monument within the specified region. The designs chosen for the reverse side of each coin is determined by a cooperative process involving the governor or chief executive of the host jurisdiction, US Department of the Interior, and US Commission of Fine Arts.

2013 ATB Silver Coins on JM Bullion

In 2013, the United States Mint released a brand-new selection of five coins in the ATB series. As with other years, the new coins represented five different jurisdictions from across the country. The coins introduced as part of the 2013 ATB Silver Coin series include:

    • New Hampshire: White Mountain National Forest was established as a protectorate of the US Forest Service on May 16, 1918. The park covers 750,852 acres of land in eastern New Hampshire, with 5% of the park’s ground actually falling in Maine. The White Mountain National Forest ATB coins saw a mintage of 35,000.
    • Ohio: Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry led an overmatched US naval force against the British Navy in the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. His victory held the British at bay, keeping them out of America’s interior. The park and International Peace Memorial honoring lasting peace between the US, UK, and Canada was established on March 3, 1919. Only 30,000 coins were produced with this design.
    • Nevada: The Great Basin Park National Park in Nevada was established on January 24, 1922. Its famous resident is the bristlecone pine, which is featured on the reverse-side design. Only 30,000 coins with the Great Basin Park design were minted.
    • Maryland: As Francis Scott Key watched the British naval bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, he penned what would become the national anthem of the United States. The battle at Fort McHenry was a turning point in the war, as the young US Army withstood the British attack. The fort was established as a protected site on March 3, 1925. Only 30,000 coins were made with this design.
    • South Dakota: In the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, the faces of four of America’s greatest presidents were carved into a craggy rock face following World War I. The Mount Rushmore design used on the ATB series is the same as that from the state quarters series, one of just three designs recycled from that program. The South Dakota ATB coin was only minted to create 35,000 coins.

Certified 2013 ATB Silver Coins on JM Bullion

JM Bullion proudly offers 2013 ATB Silver Coins in brilliant uncirculated condition, as well as certified coins that have been graded by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation or the Professional Coin Grading Service. These two companies are the world’s preeminent coin certifiers, and a grade from either adds inherent value to any precious metal project.

For those unfamiliar with the grading process and terminology of the NGC and PCGS, the following offers a brief glimpse into the common definitions you’ll find:

    • Mint State 70: Coins with an MS70 grade are considered perfect, having their full, original luster, and no detracting flaws of any kind.
    • Mint State 69: An MS69 coin is a near-perfect product that has its full, original luster, but may also have a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are located outside the primary focal areas though.

Two additional terms to familiarize yourself with are deeply-mirrored and deeply-mirrored, proof-like. Although proof coins are typically the only ones to features these types of brilliant finishes, they are common on some certified 2013 ATB Silver coins.
