2012 America The Beautiful Coins from JM Bullion

As the third year of production got underway for the America the Beautiful quarters, it was clear that investors and collectors were clamoring for these coins. Produced by the United States Mint at its Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities, the series consists of five new coins each year. The 2012 ATB Silver Coins represented five new states or territories from America, and are available online courtesy of JM Bullion.

Overview of the 2012 ATB Silver Coins on JM Bullion

America the Beautiful is a 56-coin series of American quarters that feature images of national parks, forests, and monuments from across the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, and the nation’s overseas territories. In total, the coin series will feature all 50 states, the five territories of Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

The America the Beautiful coin series was authorized with passage of the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 by Congress. The series is not the same as the original state quarters series that was introduced late in the 20th century. That particular series featured circulation US quarters with new reverse designs. These coins are 5 oz coins that are much larger, and not intended for direct circulation in the US economy.

Each year, the United States Mint releases five new coins in the ATB series. The program was launched in 2010, and is scheduled to run through at least 2021. With just one coin scheduled for release in 2021, the Secretary of the Treasury has the power to extend the series through 2033.

2012 ATB Silver Coins on JM Bullion

As with the previous two years of America the Beautiful coins, there are five new designs available for investors and collectors to look at on JM Bullion. The following is a breakdown of the new coins introduced as part of the 2012 ATB Silver coin series:

    • Puerto Rico: The first coin of the 2012 series is also the first coin to represent a territory of the US. El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest found in US territory. The area was originally established as a protected area by the ruling Spanish, but recognized by American officials on January 17, 1903 following annexation of the island after the Spanish-American War. A total of 24,000 coins were produced with this design.
    • New Mexico: The Chaco Ravine in New Mexico was once a cultural hub for numerous Southwestern tribes, and today its brilliant clay pueblos remain as a testimony of the area’s former glory. Chaco Culture National Historic Park was established on March 11, 1907. Only 24,400 coins were minted with the Chaco Culture design.
    • Maine: Acadia National Park is home to the highest peak in the Eastern United States. Established as a park on July 8, 1916, the park is home to a variety of different environments, from towering peaks to rocky coastlines. Only 25,400 Acadia National Park coins were minted.
    • Hawaii: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes, drawing millions of visitors each year to this island state. The park was established as a protective zone on August 1, 1916. The total mintage for the Hawaiian ATB coin was only 20,000.
    • Alaska: Denali National Park and Reserve is home to Denali, otherwise known as Mount McKinley, which is the highest peak in the United States and North America. The preserve was set aside as protected land on February 26, 1917. Only 20,000 coins were produced with this design.

Each 2012 ATB Silver Coin from JM Bullion features a unique design on the reverse side that represents the particular state and park highlighted. The obverse side of each 2012 ATB Silver Coin bears the image of President George Washington. His image is the same as that which appears on circulation American quarters, but has been refined from the 1932 John Flanagan portrait. Flanagan’s design is itself based upon a 1786 bust of Washington created by William Cousins.

Certified 2012 ATB Silver Coins through JM Bullion

JM Bullion not only offers 2012 ATB Silver coins in brilliant, uncirculated coins, but also offers a variety of coins with certified grades from either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation or Professional Coin Grading Service. These two companies are the most respected in the industry, and their grades add inherent value to the coins available from JM Bullion.

For those who are not familiar with the grades and definitions available from the NGC and PCGS, you can learn a little more about them below:

    • Mint State 70: This grade is used for perfect coins which have their full, original luster, and no detracting flaws, hairlines, contact marks, or blemishes.
    • Mint State 69: This is the second highest grade available for coins, and indicates a coin with its full, original luster, but also a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are often visible only outside the primary focal areas of the coin.

On occasion, the PCGS and NGC issue additional certification to bullion coins with special finishes. Many of our 2012 ATB Silver coins are available in deeply-mirrored (DM) or deeply-mirrored, proof-like (DMPL) finishes. Bullion coins with these finishes are unique and have the appearance of a proof coin.
