The silver tetradrachms of Sicily produced during the mid 5th century BC represent the period of the island’s coinage tradition immediately preceding its greatest artistic flowering, a moment of rapid technical development and growing artistic confidence when the die engravers of the great Sicilian cities were pushing the boundaries of their craft toward the breathtaking achievements that would culminate in the masterwork coins of the late 5th century. This Sicilian AR Tetradrachm from Syracuse is in Very Fine condition, according to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), and comes with an impressive 5/5 strike grade. Today, Sicily Syracuse AR Tetradrachm Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The tetradrachms struck at Syracuse between approximately 450 and 440 BC were produced during a decade of consolidating civic confidence and growing artistic ambition at the most powerful and culturally sophisticated Greek city in the western Mediterranean, a period when Syracuse was channeling the wealth and pride generated by its victory at Himera into an increasingly ambitious program of public art, architecture, and coinage.
This Sicily Syracuse AR Tetradrachm Coin is in Very Fine condition with an impressive 5/5 strike grade. This strike grade is reserved for coins with strongly struck designs that retain most of the original crispness and detail. The 3/5 surface grade is for coins that have modest signs of wear and tear, diminished luster, and some presence of toning in the silver.
On the obverse of the Sicilian AR Tetradrachm Coin, you will find the bust of Nike within a quadriga composition that was rendered with increasing sophistication and dynamic energy as the city’s die engravers refined their handling of challenging design concepts. The reverse of the Sicily Syracuse AR Tetradrachm Coin comes with the famous image of Arethusa. This particular coin features the deity with a depiction of a horse in right-profile relief, as well as dolphins beneath the horse.
