Previewing the 2017 Year of the Rooster Coins from Perth Mint

roosters1Another calendar year is upon us, and that means the Perth Mint is ready to release the latest coins in its ever-popular Lunar Series II coin program. These coins have been available to investors and collectors alike since 2008, and followed the very successful Lunar Series I program that ran just before it from 1996 to 2007.

Each year the coins in the Lunar Series II program feature new designs that honor the animal represented on the Chinese Lunar Calendar for that year. The 12-year cycle of the Zodiac is followed closely by the Perth Mint, with each new coin release reflecting the animal in question. For 2017, the Year of the Rooster design has been released with variations between silver and gold.

Learn all about the program below, and don’t forget to go check out the JM Bullion online catalog to get your hands on your very own 2017 Australian Year of the Rooster Coin.

    Bullion Coins

The bullion version of the 2017 Year of the Rooster coins from the Perth Mint include both silver and gold options. Both versions are immensely diverse, with something for investors at every level of wealth. The 2017 Australian Silver Rooster coins are available from JM Bullion in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, and include the following weights:

Each of these silver bullion coins contains .9999 pure silver content and has a face value based upon its weight, with the starting point being the 1 Troy oz Australian Silver Rooster with a $1 (AUD) face value. The 1 oz coin has a declared mintage already of 300,000 coins for the year.

When it comes to the 2017 Australian Gold Rooster coin, they are again available from JM Bullion as Brilliant Uncirculated specimens with a metal content of .9999 pure gold. The available weights for the gold version of the bullion coin are more diverse, and include a variety of fractional-weight coins to choose from:

The face value for these coins is much greater than the silver counterparts, and again based upon the weight of the individual coins starting with a $100 (AUD) face value for the 1 oz Australian Gold Rooster coin. The 1 oz weight is the only product with a declared maximum mintage to date, set at 30,000 coins.

As mentioned, these coins are BU specimens. Coins in Brilliant Uncirculated condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear on their surfaces, but you will notice minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the coining process.

    Proof Coins

As always, the Perth Mint has made the 2017 Year of the Rooster coins in the Lunar Series II program available. Compared to the bullion versions of the coins however, you’ll find the Proof Australian Rooster Coins to exhibit a more beautiful luster and have much lower mintages, making it imperative that you act quickly if you wish to secure one of these coins.

The 2017 Proof Australian Rooster Coins are available in a total of three different weights, as well as a combined 3-Coin set with a fourth weight available. The weights available include the following:

    • ½ Troy oz
    • 1 Troy oz
    • 1 Kilogram (32.15 Troy oz)
    • 2 Troy oz*

Now, the 1 Kilogram Australian Silver Rooster coin is only available for individual purchase with a declared mintage of just 500 coins. The 1 oz and ½ oz Australian Silver Rooster coins are available for individual purchase with limits of 5,000 and 8,000 coins respectively. However, these two weights are also available in the 3-coin set, which includes a 2 oz coin that is not available for individual purchase. The maximum mintage for the 3-coin set is 1,000.

For the 2017 Proof Australian Gold Rooster coins, there are three individual weights available and a 3-coin set available for purchase as well. The weights in the Proof Australian Gold Rooster series include:

    • 1/10 Troy oz
    • ¼ Troy oz
    • 1 Troy oz

These coins are available for individual purchase or in a grouping of all three from the Perth Mint. There is a somewhat complex set of mintage figures for these gold proofs, so let’s go through it quickly. There is a maximum mintage for each coin of 6,000 1 oz coins and 8,000 each for the 1/10 oz and ¼ oz coins. Only 3,000 coins will be issued for individual purchase in the 1 oz weight, 5,000 coins maximum in the ¼ oz weight, and 4,000 coins maximum from the 1/10 oz weight.

All Proof Australian Rooster Coins ship to you individually inside of oval-shaped Perth Mint black display boxes. The coins include a Certificate of Authenticity with individual production number and arrive in a Year of the Rooster, Lunar Series II-themed shipper. This includes the 3-coin proof sets that arrive in one display box.
