The $5 Gold Half Eagle Coin from the United States Mint was in circulation from 1795 to 1929, with a handful of interruptions in annual production over the course of time. The most consistent design offered in this denomination was Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design from 1838. Introduced on the Half Eagle in 1839, it was produced annually through 1908. Today, Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins in AU condition are available at JM Bullion.

The $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle is one of the more unique coins within the US Eagle denomination. The most notable aspect of this design series is the fact that the Liberty Head design for the Half Eagle is the only coin of a single design in this series to have been produced by seven branch mints. Between 1839 and 1908, the Liberty Half Eagle was produced at some point by Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver.
All of these Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are offered in About Uncirculated 58 condition. Coins with this grade are often referred to as “slider specimens” because the condition of the coin is so close to that of a BU coin that the two could be mistaken. AU58 coins have medium to near-full luster with either extremely light friction or only trace signs of friction on the highest relief points.
On the obverse of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Half Eagles is a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this visual shows the head of Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown. There is a ring of 13 stars around the bust and a date mark at the bottom.
The reverse side of the $5 Liberty Half Eagle Coin comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. This coin series featured Type I (1839-1866) and Type II (1866-1908) designs. All coins in this range have a front-facing heraldic eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. Only Type II coins include the banner above the eagle with the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST.
