In this design, Liberty is set in left-profile relief and wears a coronet crown on her head with the word LIBERTY engraved on it. There are 13 stars around this bust and a date mark at the bottom.
The heraldic eagle of the United States features on the reverse of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Half Eagles. This design was also created by Gobrecht and depicts a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The nation of issue and face value are noted. Coins dated 1866 and later include the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST.
