The Pre-33 Gold Quarter Eagle from the United States Mint was the smallest denomination in the US Eagle Series and the second smallest denomination of gold issue in the United States behind only the short-lived $1 gold coin. The final design used in the $2.50 Quarter Eagle Series was the Indian Quarter Eagle, the nation’s first-ever incuse design strike. Today, Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle Coins in AU58 condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint issued the Indian Quarter Eagle in thirteen different years, with 15 circulation versions. Only two years, 1911 and 1914 featured strikes by two mints in the same year, with Philadelphia and Denver issuing the coins in both those release years. Among the thirteen issue years, 1925 was the only year that Philadelphia did not issue the coins as only the Denver Mint struck the coins that year.
All Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle Coins in this listing are in About Uncirculated 58 condition. AU58 is the highest grade in the AU range, which extends from 50 to 58 on the Sheldon Numeric Scale. AU58 coins are often called sliders as their visual appearance is very close to that of an uncirculated coin. These coins have only trace signs of friction on the highest relief points and medium to near-full mint luster. Please note, we cannot guarantee a specific year of issue. If you buy more than one, you may receive coins with the same year of issue.
On the obverse of Pre-33 Indian Gold Quarter Eagles is an effigy of an indigenous figure. This design from Bela Lyon Pratt was also used on the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle and shows an indigenous figure in left-profile relief with a feathered headdress.
The reverse side of Pre-33 $2.50 Indian Gold Eagle Coins comes with a depiction of the American bald eagle. This image was also designed by Pratt and used on the Half Eagle as well. It depicts an American bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch wrapped around the sheaf.
