Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for the $20 Double Eagle was introduced in 1907 and notably lacked the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse field. Previous Double Eagles had included the motto since 1866, but the debut of the Saint-Gaudens design lacked the phrase. In late 1908, the US Mint redesigned the reverse to include the motto, but before more than 5.29 million coins were struck.
The obverse of the Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle features a front-facing effigy of Lady Liberty. The design captures her figure walking toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
On the reverse side of $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin is a depiction of the American bald eagle. This design shows the bald eagle in left-profile relief gliding through the sky as it soars over the rising sun beneath.
