Over the course of time, the coin went through three different design types, with all changes occurring on the reverse of the coins. Originally, the US Mint issued the coins without the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST and a different variation on the lettering for the denomination. The Type 2 release in 1866 addressed the former issue.
Emblazoned on the obverse of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles rests the left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty. Crafted in 1849 by James B. Longacre, this rendition portrays Liberty donning a coronet crown circled by a constellation of 13 stars.
The reverse face of the Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagle showcases the Magnificent Seal of the United States. A distinctive iteration of the heraldic eagle takes center stage, presenting the bald eagle in a frontal stance.
