On the obverse of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you will find a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Created in 1849 by James B. Longacre, the design captures a bust of Liberty wearing a coronet crown with a ring of 13 stars around the design.
The reverse of the Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagle features the Great Seal of the United States. This twist on the heraldic eagle features the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. As the Type 2 design, the difference on this side is the inclusion of the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST within the circle of stars over the eagle’s head. This was done in the aftermath of the Civil War to promote national unity.
