The San Francisco Mint was one of the most prolific branch mints when it came to striking the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin. Opened in 1854, the San Francisco Mint would issue Liberty Double Eagles every year from 1854 to 1907 when the series ended. The only year it did not strike the Liberty Double Eagle was 1886. In the obverse design of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, the United States Mint features a depiction of Lady Liberty. Her figure is shown here in a left-profile portrait with a coronet crown on her head. The portrait is encircled by 13 stars and enclosed at the bottom by the year of issue.
For the reverse design of Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, the Great Seal of the United States is depicted. This image shows a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other. There is a ring of 13 stars above the eagle’s head. As a Type II specimen, these coins have the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST engraved within the ring of stars.
The United States Mint issued the Double Eagle from 1850 to 1866 without a change in the designs. Following the Civil War, the decision was made to add the national motto to the ring of 13 stars in an effort to promote national unity. The Type II reverse was only used from 1866 to 1876 by the US Mint, with a third iteration of the reverse design introduced in 1877.
