The most popular gold coin in American history is the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle coin. Issued by the United States Mint from 1849 to 1933, the coin featured only two different designs of Liberty during its nearly century-long run in circulation. In this listing, the first design to grace the coins is offered. The Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is currently available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion with a certification.
Coin Highlights:
The Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin was the largest denomination of gold coin issued by the United States Mint. The first versions of this coin were struck by the US Mint in 1849, joining the other denominations that included the Gold Eagle ($10), Half Eagle ($5), and Quarter Eagle ($2.50).
Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle coins were first struck in 1849 and sparked by the influx of gold into the Treasury following the California Gold Rush. The coin’s original design included a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty and went through various iterations from its official 1850 start date to its conclusion in 1906. The first Liberty design lacked the national motto and had a face value as “twenty D” from 1849 to 1866. The national motto was added to this existing design from 1866 to 1876. From 1878 until 1906, the national motto remained and the coin’s face value was now listed as “twenty dollars.”
On the obverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins is the first design in the series. Created by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, the design is a simple portrait of Liberty with a crown on her head.
On the reverse of $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins is the heraldic eagle of the United States. This twist on the Great Seal of the United States of America was designed by Longacre as well.
These Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins have a protective plastic slab to house the coin and ensure its Mint State 66 certification. Coins in this condition have above average quality for mint luster and no more than three to four minor or noticeable contact marks. You’ll also notice a few light hairlines visible under magnification.
