The Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin was designed for the US Mint in 1849 by James B. Longacre, the 4^th Chief Engraver. Longacre’s tenure coincided with the passage of the Coinage Act of 1857, which led to significant changes in U.S. coinage, including the elimination of the half cent and the reduction in the size of the cent. His Liberty Head design for the Double Eagle was the longest-running design he created.

This series went through three design types, with the eagle, US national shield, arrows of war, and olive branch of peace present in all designs. The Type II coin added the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST to the reverse, while the Type III coin included the previous addition to the field and changed the face value from Twenty D. to Twenty Dollars.
