Unlike the other coins in the US Eagle gold denomination from the United States Mint, the Double Eagle Series featured only two designs during its eight-decade history. The longest-used design was the original imagery in the series, James B. Longacre’s 1850 depiction of Liberty. Right now, Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available from JM Bullion.

Liberty Gold Double Eagles were designed by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. In addition to the Liberty Gold Double Eagle, Longacre introduced several design innovations during his tenure, including the distinctive Indian Head cent, which featured Liberty wearing a Native American headdress on the obverse and a wreath of oak leaves and acorns on the reverse.
The obverse side of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles comes with a depiction of Lady Liberty. In this left-profile relief, Liberty has her hair up in a tight bun with loose locks at the back and a coronet crown on her head.
On the reverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you will find the Great Seal of the United States. Similar to the heraldic eagle, the image includes a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. This series went through three reverse design types. The Type I coin had its face value marked as Twenty D. and lacked the national motto. Type II coins added the national motto. Type III coins included the national motto and a new face value marking of Twenty Dollars, instead of Twenty D.
