Coin Highlights:
Congress established the denominations of the US Eagle gold series in the 1790s with the very first release of American coinage from the United States Mint. The term Eagle was used in association with the $10 denomination. Later introductions of a Half Eagle and a Quarter Eagle resulted in $5 and $2.50 gold coins as well, respectively.
In 1849, Congress passed another coinage act that authorized the production of a Double Eagle, or $20 coin, and a new gold dollar. The design used for 57 years on the Double Eagle was based on Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design from the other denominations. It was modified for the Double Eagle by James B. Longacre who was then serving as the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
