The United States Mint issued the US Eagle denomination of gold coins for more than a century, with the first denomination released in 1795. The final denomination issued was the Double Eagle, a $20 gold coin the US Mint introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush. The Double Eagle was one of the first gold coins issued as a result of the influx of gold that hit the US Treasury following the gold rush. Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles were first issued by the US Mint in 1849, but these early coins were proofs for the eventual circulation pieces that would be issued in larger numbers starting in 1850. The coins used the designs already in place on the US Eagle denomination as created in 1837 by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
All Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles in this 4-Coin set offer 90% gold content with 10% copper included. The individual coins have .9675 Troy oz of gold content for a total of nearly 4 Troy oz of gold when purchasing this four-coin set. Each coin is in About Uncirculated or better condition. This means each coin has most or all of its original mint luster, with light or trace wear and tear visible only on the highest points of the coin. Please keep in mind that the date marks available in these four-coin sets range only from 1850 to 1899, making all coins pre-1900 issues. On the obverse side of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins is the left-profile effigy of Liberty. The iconic design captures a depiction of the allegory known as Libertas with a coronet crown in her hair, much of her hair tied up in a bun at the back of her head, and a few curls hanging down the side of her head. The field includes a ring of 13 stars and a date mark below the bust of Liberty.
The reverse face of Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagles comes with the heraldic eagle of the United States. The Double Eagle coin had a modified version of the Great Seal of the United States. Rays of sunshine stretch from one outstretched wingtip of the eagle to the other. A circle 13 stars rests above the head of the eagle, with the US national shield on its chest and the olive branch of peace and arrows of war in its talons. Coins in this set dated 1850 to 1865 have no national motto. Coins issued after 1866 have “In God We Trust” inside a modified ring of 13 stars.
