The Liberty Double Eagle was the first design series in the $20 Gold Double Eagle Series from the United States Mint. Introduced into circulation in 1850, this coin program was produced by the US Mint until 1907 when it was replaced with modern images. During its time in circulation, the Liberty Double Eagle went through three design types, all of which you can get in this singular set. Right now, Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold 3-Coin Boxed Sets are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
Each Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle 3-Coin Boxed Set comes with three Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagles in Extremely Fine condition. The coins arrive in a box set and the set features one coin representing each of the Type I, Type II, and Type III releases in the Liberty Double Eagle Series between 1850 and 1907. Please note that we cannot guarantee the specific year of issue for any of the three coins. Each coin will have a year of issue reflective of its Type I, II, or III issue range.
The US Mint’s Liberty Double Eagle Coins featured three subtle design variations between 1850 and 1907. The Type I coin (1850-1866) lacked the national motto on the reverse and had a face value noted as TWENTY D. The Type II design (1866-1876) was introduced in 1866 and kept the same engraving for the face value, while adding the national motto to the reverse. The Type III design (1877-1907) continued with the national motto’s presence on the reverse, while changing the face value engraving to TWENTY DOLLARS.
On the obverse of each Pre-33 $20 Double Eagle Coin, you will find James B. Longacre’s portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief depicts Liberty wearing a coronet crown with 13 stars in an arch around her head and a date mark at the bottom.
The reverse of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Coins features the Great Seal of the United States. This design depicts a bald eagle with an ornate US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The ring of stars above the eagle’s head is empty on Type I coins, but features the national motto within on Type II and Type III coins. Beneath the eagle, Type I and Type II coins have the TWENTY D. denomination, while Type III coins have the TWENTY DOLLARS denomination.
