The $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin was the largest denomination in the US Eagle Series and was issued only from 1849 to 1933. The coin was largely used in the 20th century as payment for international commerce. The coin featured two of the most beautiful design elements in US coining history. Today, Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle 2-Coin Sets are available to you online from JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
The $20 Gold Double Eagle was first issued in 1849 as a proof strike to launch the series. The coins were released by the US Mint in direct response to the influx of gold coming into the US Treasury from the California Gold Rush. The Double Eagle debuted at a point in time when the other gold coins of the US Eagle Series had already gone through three different design elements.
All of the coins in the Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle 2-Coin Sets in this listing come with plastic flips and arrive in About Uncirculated-plus condition. Coins in this condition have light or trace wear on the highest relief points, with medium or near-full mint luster still present. The coins will be dated either 1849-1907 for the Liberty Head design or 1907 to 1933 for the Saint-Gaudens design.
On the obverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in this set are effigies of Liberty. The Liberty Head Series comes with a left-profile bust of Liberty wearing the coronet crown. The Saint-Gaudens Series features a front-facing relief of Liberty walking toward the viewer with sun rays behind her figure and a circle of 46 or 48 stars around her effigy. Coins dated 1908-1911 have 46 stars, while coins dated 1908-1933 have 48 stars reflecting the admission of Arizona and New Mexico to the Union.
The reverse of coins in the Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle 2-Coin Set depicts American bald eagles. The Liberty coin has a version of the heraldic eagle of the United States, while the Saint-Gaudens coin features an American bald eagle soaring over the sun.
