The Liberty Gold Eagle design was the second of three to feature on the $10 Gold Eagle. It was designed in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, and it featured on the coins until 1907 with only one minor design change. Known as Type I and Type II, the original reverse did not include the national motto (1838-1866), while the Type II coins featured a banner with the national motto (1866-1907).
Lady Liberty graced the obverse of the Pre-33 Liberty Gold Eagle Coin. The design element shown here offers a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. This portrait shows only her head with a coronet crown resting atop her head. The field features 13 stars in a ring around the image and a date mark at the bottom.

The design includes the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in the eagle’s talons, with the national motto present on Type II versions of the coin.
