Liberty Gold Eagles were issued by the US Mint from 1838 to 1907 with two reverse design versions. From 1838 to 1866, the coins did not include the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Following the end of the US Civil War, the US Mint added the motto to the reverse design field in late 1866 and made no further changes to the coins through the end of the series in 1907.
Obverse design elements on Pre-33 Liberty Gold Eagles feature a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. This bust of Lady Liberty offers a left-profile relief that includes a ring of 13 stars around her portrait. The date mark is at the bottom of the field.
Reverse visuals on $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins include the heraldic eagle of the United States. The primary design includes the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest, as well as the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. For Type II coins, there is a banner above the eagle with the US national motto.
