For a brief period in the 19th century, the United States Mint issued a one dollar gold coin for circulation. In its brief history, the series went through three design types, with the Type 1 design available through the first five years. Now, certified Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins from the Type 1 issue are available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint introduced the Gold Dollar in 1849 at the same time that the new $20 Gold Double Eagle was released. Both coins were introduced as a result of the influx of gold to the US Treasury from the California Gold Rush in 1849.
US Gold Dollars were designed by James B. Longacre, the same man who created the images for the first $20 Gold Double Eagle. In fact, the Type 1 design from the One Dollar Gold Coin was the same for this period as the Double Eagle on the obverse side.
On the obverse of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins, you will find the Type 1 image from the series. This depiction shows Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown that is engraved with the word LIBERTY. This side of the coin has no other inscriptions, with only a ring of 13 stars around the design.
The reverse face of the $1 Liberty Gold Coin comes with a design from Peter Filatreau Cross. This simple design features a small wreath around the inscriptions of the face value and date of the coin. The nation of issue is also depicted on this side of the coin.
These Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins are available to purchase in Mint State 61 condition. This grade is issued by either the PCGS or the NGC, with coins in this condition showcasing diminished mint luster, clusters of large and small contact marks, and noticeable hairlines.
