The Liberty Double Eagle is one of the most iconic denominations in the history of American currency. Introduced in 1850, the $20 Double Eagle was available through 1933 and featured only two different design series in its 84-year history. Though the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is regarded as one of America’s most beautiful designs, the Liberty Double Eagle was the first and longest-used design in the history of the $20 Double Eagle. Today, Pre-1900 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The United States introduced the $20 Double Eagle in 1850 as a result of an influx of gold from the California Gold Rush. The Double Eagle was the largest denomination of gold coinage ever issued by the United States and it was predominantly used in bank-to-bank transactions and international commerce. The Liberty Double Eagle, issued from 1850 to 1907, was the longest-running design and featured artwork from James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
All Pre-1900 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here come in MS61 condition. These coins have a diminished mint luster with clusters of large and small contact marks possible throughout. Please note that we do not guarantee the year of issue of any given specimen, with possible dates ranging from 1850 to 1899 in this particular listing. The coins may feature different labels and will be graded by either the PCGS or NGC.
On the obverse of $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles is a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by Longacre with inspiration from Christian Gobrecht’s $10 Eagle design, it depicts Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head. Her portrait is encircled by 13 stars and a date mark appears below the bust.
The reverse of the Pre-1900 Liberty Double Eagle Coin comes with a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. This image of the bald eagle with the US national shield wen through three iterations, or Types, between 1850 and 1900. The original design did not include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in the ring of stars above the eagle and used TWENTY D. as the face value. In 1866, the Type II version debuted with the national motto added to the ring above the eagle. In 1877, the Type III version debuted, keeping the national motto while editing the face value inscription to read TWENTY DOLLARS.
