Collectors welcomed the reappearance of two of the US Mint’s most recognizable silver dollar designs in 2021. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the final Morgan Dollar release and the debut of the original Peace Dollar, the US Mint revived both historic designs. Beginning in 2023, these silver dollars have been struck annually as collectible issues for numismatists. Today, Peace Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Peace Dollar made its debut in late December 1921, with the first coins struck on December 28 at the Philadelphia Mint. The new design had been selected through a competition held by the Commission of Fine Arts, with Anthony de Francisci’s submission chosen to commemorate the peace following World War I. The 1921 Peace Dollar was struck in high relief, creating deeply detailed and artistic coins, though this proved impractical for mass production and would soon be modified.
All Peace Silver Dollar Coins available here come in Mint State 70 condition. Coins with this grade are considered perfect specimens, with full, original mint luster and no visible detractions. Please bear in mind that this listing offers coins with various years of issue from 2023 onward. We cannot promise a specific year of issue or label design for the coin you receive.
The obverse of the Peace Dollar Coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty created by sculptor Anthony de Francisci. Liberty is shown wearing a crown with radiant rays extending outward, representing freedom and enlightenment. De Francisci modeled Liberty after his wife, Teresa, offering a youthful and modern interpretation that differs from earlier representations of Liberty on US coinage.
On the reverse of the Peace Silver Dollar is an image of a bald eagle perched calmly, holding an olive branch in its talons. This symbolism reflects the nation’s desire for peace in the aftermath of World War I. The relaxed posture of the eagle intentionally contrasts with the more forceful and defensive designs used on earlier silver dollar coins.
