The obverse of these Peace Silver Dollars features a portrait of Lady Liberty. In this design by Anthony de Francisci, we see Liberty in right-profile relief with flowing hair and a radiate crown. Francisci, an Italian immigrant, drew inspiration from the Statue of Liberty when designing this portrait. There are also inscriptions on the obverse reading Liberty, In God We Trust. You will find the release year just below the portrait design as well.
On the reverse side of the Peace Silver Dollar, there is a depiction of a bald eagle. Francisci also designed this image, which features the eagle facing right with folded wings. In the bird’s talons, you will see an olive branch, which symbolizes peace. Majestic rays of light shine forth as the bird looks off into the distance. There are inscriptions also reading United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, One Dollar, and Peace.
In 1921, the US Mint began striking silver dollars again as part of the 1918 Pittman Act. While the Morgan Dollar was initially struck, an essay by numismatist Farran Zerbe encouraged the U.S. to mint a new design in honor of the peace the country was celebrating in the wake of WWI. The Peace Dollar was ultimately granted by Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon, with production beginning in the final days of 1921.
