The American bald eagle is more than just a magnificent creature; it is a symbol that embodies the American spirit, American freedom, and the longevity of our mighty Republic. On June 20, 2025, America will celebrate National American Eagle Day and JM Bullion is offering the nation’s iconic, official bullion coins on sale as part of the celebration.
National American Eagle Day is observed annually on June 20th to honor America’s national bird, the bald eagle. This day was established to celebrate the remarkable recovery of the bald eagle population, which faced near extinction in the 1960s due to DDT pesticide use and habitat destruction. The observance provides an opportunity for Americans to learn about eagle conservation efforts, visit wildlife refuges and rehabilitation centers, and appreciate the majestic bird that has symbolized American strength and freedom since 1782.
National American Eagle Day holds profound importance as both a conservation success story and a symbol of national resilience. The day serves as a powerful reminder of how dedicated environmental protection efforts can bring a species back from the brink of extinction—the bald eagle population has grown from fewer than 500 breeding pairs in the 1960s to over 70,000 today.
More importantly, National American Eagle Day serves a point beyond its conservation message. The observance reinforces the cultural and patriotic significance of the bald eagle as America’s national emblem, representing the ideals of freedom, strength, and perseverance that define the American spirit.
As part of our celebration of National American Eagle Day, JM Bullion offers the 1 oz American Silver Eagle and 1 oz American Gold Eagle on sale for our customers. These two coins are part of a singular program that launched in 1986 as private gold and silver ownership began to increase across America.
The 1 oz American Silver Eagle features one of the nation’s two greatest coin designs of all time. Adolph A. Weinman’s timeless depiction of Walking Liberty captures the female allegory in left-profile relief as she strides toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped around her figure. On the reverse, two designs have been used in the program’s history. From 1986 to mid-2021, John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle emblem was used on the reverse. Since mid-2021, the US Mint has showcased a natural depiction of the bald eagle in flight with its wings extended and its talons clutching a large oak branch. This design comes from Emily Damstra.
The 1 oz American Gold Eagle also showcases an iconic image of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this groundbreaking rendition of the Liberty figure is widely considered to be America’s greatest singular coin design. It depicts Liberty’s full-length figure in front-facing relief as she strides toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Like the Silver Eagle, the Gold Eagle’s reverse has used two designs in its history. From 1986 to mid-2021, Miley Busiek’s depiction of a bald eagle family within its nest featured on the coins. Since mid-2021, Jennie Norris’s up-close portrait of a bald eagle’s head has redefined the concept of intricate detail in American coin design.
The design changes to the reverse of these respective coins occurred in 2021 as part of the US Mint’s 35th-anniversary celebration for the American Eagle Series.
